Paycheck RulesPAYCHECKRULES

Manifesto

Three starter rules.

One idea each. For a life that resets every fourteen days.

  1. 01

    Leftover

Name what remains after the bills that already have names.

A two-week deposit is not a budget. Subtract the bills you can point at — rent, the car, the ones with a due date this period. What remains is leftover. That is the only number that can move. If leftover is zero, the map is the problem, not your character.

  2. 02

    Hours

Divide the deposit by the hours you actually spent.

The offer letter is a sticker. The paycheck is a pile of hours — commute, unpaid wrap-up, the Saturday you said was optional. Hours tells you what this life costs per hour after the unpaid bits. A raise that eats your evenings is not automatically a raise.

  3. 03

    Silent bills

The bills that do not yell on payday still spend.

Annuals, subscriptions, the insurance that hits the other week. Silent bills do not argue with you on Friday. They just arrive. Pull them onto the two-week calendar or they will keep looking like surprises.
